National Volunteer Week is the perfect time to celebrate the efforts of our hardworking volunteers such as Michael Newman, who spends three days a week as a volunteer transport driver and community connections volunteer.

The grandfather signed up to volunteer at Silverchain after retiring from the police force, and is well known as the all-rounder who brightens everyone’s day.

“When I retired, I knew I still had so much to give. The feeling you get when you volunteer is a sense of pure happiness,” Michael said.

“I feel as though I am making a difference in the community, and it makes me so proud.”

I love engaging with the clients. Many of them only have social interaction at the social centre, so when I see them and chat, their faces light up and it lights up my life

Claire Lawrie, Volunteer Team Leader said Michael is known at Everglades Social Centre as an inspiring man with a heart of gold.

“Michael is the spirit of volunteering and our clients love being around him. He makes everyone feel so special.”
