Volunteer honoured for commitment to her community
For more than three decades, Lucia Scata has been the heart of Silverchain’s Fremantle Social Centre, stirring together generosity, tradition and a love of good food.
Since 1992, Mrs Scata has spent countless hours cooking Italian meals for clients – nourishing not just their appetites, but also their sense of belonging.
In honour of National Volunteer Week (19–25 May), Mrs Scata’s story is a wonderful reflection of the vital role volunteers play at Silverchain. Every day, volunteers across Western Australia make deeply personal contributions – offering social connection, support and care that enrich the lives of clients and strengthen communities.
This year, her dedication was recognised with the Senior Citizen of the Year award at the City of Cockburn’s Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony, alongside other community volunteers.
The grandmother said she never expected to be honoured for her work.
“My son put in the application, and I had no idea,” Mrs Scata said. “He told me, ‘You have to go to the ceremony,’ and I was completely stunned – even he was! I wasn’t expecting it at all.”
Silverchain’s Executive Director, WA, Renae Lavell said Mrs Scata’s kindness and commitment had touched the lives of many.
Mrs Scata, who migrated from Italy to Australia 60 years ago, said that even after more than three decades of volunteering, she has no plans to slow down.
“I just love it. Cooking for everyone, seeing them happy – that’s what keeps me going,” Mrs Scata said.
Our volunteers share their time, compassion and experience so our clients remain connected to their community. You can find more more information on becoming a volunteer here.
