For more than a century, Silverchain’s community care has been supported by generous donations, especially gifts in Wills or bequests.

These contributions have helped connect more Australians to world-class care, revolutionary health care technology, and support services they can trust. These gifts support research and innovation at Silverchain, fund training and development opportunities for the care teams, and help relieve financial pressure for vulnerable clients.

Silverchain Foundation Executive Director Bronwyn Perry emphasises that donating can be a meaningful way to say thank you, and contribute to improving health and aged care.

“From our humble beginnings, Silverchain has delivered care, connection, and innovation for more than a century thanks to community support and donations,” Ms Perry said.

“Leaving a gift in your Will is a statement of appreciation, for the care you or a loved one received, or so that others can experience high quality care in the future. Donating creates a lasting impact to empower more people to live safely at home for as long as they choose.”

Silverchain’s care teams have always been supported by generous donations from the community. In 1905, through the pages of the Western Mail, Muriel Chase invited children to join a special league called the ‘Silver Links’ for a small fee to help others. Many children joined Silver Links from all over Australia, leading to the creation of the Silver Chain Nursing League and the hiring of its first district nurse in 1907.

Muriel’s regular appeals for funds in her newspaper columns are responsible for the beginnings of community nursing in Western Australia. Her contribution also forms the origin of the name Silverchain that our national organisation shares today.

Today, Silver Links comprises supporters striving for a better health and aged care system through gifts in their Will.

The late Professor Krishna Somers is a generous Silver Link who devoted his life to medicine and helping others. His friend, Keith Platel, said Prof Somers was a generous, loyal and gentle person.

“Krishna was a gifted medical practitioner, teacher and medical ambassador. He was a philanthropist at heart: his contributions to many humanitarian charities epitomising a lifetime of dedication and hard work. He never forgot his roots and remained a very humble person his whole life,” Keith said.

Prof Somers’ generosity is creating a positive impact for many Australians. By leaving a gift in his Will to support the causes he cared for deeply, Prof Somers’ legacy continues to improve health and aged care services now and in the future.

“Silverchain is incredibly grateful to receive support from Prof Somers and all our Silver Links. This helps us to ensure future generations of Australians receive essential care and support at home, giving them the gift of dignity and choice,” Ms Perry said.
