There's never a dull moment at our Social Centres!
Our WA Social Centres are always buzzing with activity. Whether we’re celebrating ‘Christmas in July’, enjoying a special in-house movie screening (with plenty of popcorn!) or holding ‘Tech Savvy’ workshops for our clients to learn more about the digital world; there’s always something exciting going on!
Our Intergenerational program is without doubt one of the most innovative and rewarding programs on offer at our Social Centres. Designed to bring older adults and children together through a variety of fun activities, the program fosters significant benefits for both groups.
As they form relationships with younger generations, seniors feel more engaged and connected to their community, increasing their feeling of general wellbeing and helping them live their best life. As they interact with children, our clients also learn about new innovations, technologies and novelties.
For the kids, the relationships they build with our clients are just as valuable. Through regular connection with older adults, children develop communication and problem-solving skills, positive attitudes towards ageing and community involvement and increased self-esteem. They’re constantly learning from the older generation as they chat, discover and play together.
Social Centre Therapy Assistant, Sue Keeble, says our clients, too, love learning about what life is like for the younger generation.
“We went to Riverside Primary School about two weeks ago, and when we were there we were able to let our clients see what school is like today, compared to what it was like when they went to school, so it was really, really interesting for them."
Ultimately, Sue explains, the program allows our clients to feel valued, and an important part of the community.
“Both groups light up when they spend time together. It’s a joy to see.”
Social Centre Coordinator, Mandy Holmshaw, says seeing clients benefit by participating in what is on offer is very rewarding.
“I am extremely proud to be a part of what we’re achieving at the Social Centres. I work with excellent, dedicated staff who strive daily to deliver meaningful activities for our clients. It is a pleasure to be involved.”
