Silver Chain celebrates National Volunteer Week

Silver Chain celebrates National Volunteer Week

More than six million Australians give their time in many ways to those who need it most in the form of volunteering.

At Silver Chain, our 380 volunteers play a significant part in the care that Silver Chain delivers to tens of thousands of people across the nation every day.

From our community connections volunteers who reach lonely and isolated people, to our volunteers who provide social support to our clients receiving end-of-life care.

National Volunteer Week gives us an opportunity to thank our dedicated volunteers, who epitomise the theme of this year, ‘making a world of difference’.

Community connections volunteer Kate Rudman supports a client with dementia, Sheila, on a weekly basis. Kate also provides relief to Brian, Sheila’s husband and primary carer, with her visits.

“Sheila says she enjoys my company and looks forward to me coming every week,” said Kate.

“We get on well and have a good laugh. I think she feels comfortable with me and tells me about her family and memories.”

Kate said it was extremely rewarding to be able to help those who need it most.

“It’s nice to be able to help where I can and do something positive, even if it is small,” she said.

“I am fully aware that as Sheila’s disease progresses, things will get more difficult for her and those who care for her. But at least, for now, she is happy.”

National Volunteer Week is from 20-26 May. If you’d like to know more about volunteering opportunities, or you or someone you know could benefit from volunteer support, please contact our volunteer team on 0437 254 862.
