RDNS a ‘lifesaver’ for inspirational great-grandmother
With her strength, determination, will to live life to the fullest - and a little help from RDNS - 98-year-old Jean Croxton has triumphed over many of life’s toughest challenges.
A self-confessed fighter, the Adelaide great-grandmother has had more than her fair share of hardships.
At 12 years of age, Jean received third-degree burns to her whole body. The second blow came at the age of 21, when Jean was given 18 months to live after being diagnosed with bowel cancer.
Determined to survive and fight on, Jean beat the odds and has lived with a colostomy bag for close to 80 years.
“My doctors always said that my life could be cut short at any time. I have never let this stop me from living and loving life to the fullest,” Jean said.
For more than five years, Jean has received care from RDNS, which has allowed her to live independently in her own home.
“RDNS have been my lifesaver. Not only have they helped me with my stoma, I have had falls and they have supported me throughout my recovery. They are just marvelous,” Jean said.
“My life has not been easy. After being diagnosed with bowel cancer, my only sister died, and I adopted her newborn daughter.
“I have learnt it’s not what happens to people in life, but how you handle it. I like telling people that if you are given lemons, turn them into lemonade.”
Alison Swallow, RDNS Case Coordinator, who has been helping Jean for years, says she’s an inspiration for all.
“Jean is a truly inspiring lady. She always puts a smile on my face and puts into perspective what’s important in life.”
