Nurses recognised among State’s best

Two Silver Chain nurses have been acknowledged among the State’s best at the WA Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Awards.

Palliative care nurse Lindsay MacKenzie won the Consumer Appreciation Award. Wound care specialist Dr Robyn Rayner was one of three finalists in the Excellence in Research Category.

Based in Kingsley, Lindsay said working for Silver Chain for more than 13 years has been thoroughly rewarding.

“I am humbled and honoured to receive an award for a job I love doing,” Lindsay said.
“I’m a small part of a fantastic palliative care team.
“I get up in the morning and genuinely look forward to going to work – I’m really lucky.”

Western Australia has 38,000 nurses and midwives who make a difference daily and the Awards recognise this excellence across 13 categories.

Working as a palliative care nurse for 29 years, Lindsay provides holistic care to both patients and their families. She was nominated by the sister of a patient she cared for.

“Lindsay is the ideal nurse – caring, compassionate, kind and patient-centred,” the nominator said.

“She brought physical and emotional support, laughter and hope to the family at a critical time and continues to be a lifeline for us."

Tish Morrison, Director Clinical Operations, Palliative Care WA at Silver Chain, said Lindsay was an exceptional nurse.

"The Hospice Care Service is highly regarded by our community and we are privileged to receive a large volume of thank you cards," she said.

"Lindsay's contribution to the care of clients and their families is a regular theme in the compliments we receive."

National Palliative Care Week runs from 19 – 25 May. The 2019 theme, ‘What matters most?’ encourages Australians to plan and give thought to end-of-life care.
