Nurse Practitioner celebrates 25 years in palliative care
For Nurse Practitioner Alison Bowman, a passion for palliative care nursing has kept her in the job for 25 years.
Alison moved to Nelson Bay from Adelaide in the mid-1990s and started as a registered nurse in community palliative care while waiting for a hospital nursing job to come up.
“Now, 25 years later, I’m no longer looking for a hospital-based position,” said Alison. “I’m working in the perfect job as Nurse Practitioner for a wonderful health service organisation.”
A Nurse Practitioner (NP) is a registered nurse who is experienced in a clinical specialty, has completed education at Masters level, and has been endorsed by the Nurses and Midwives Board of Australia (NMBA).
Provided by Silver Chain in partnership with Western Sydney Local Health District, the service offers free, community-based palliative care to the local government areas of Auburn, Blacktown, The Hills Shire, Holroyd and Parramatta.
“Our service gives clients the dignity and comfort of being at home when they are told they no longer have a cure for their condition,” said Alison.
Through Social Impact Funding from the NSW Government, Silver Chain has been able to enhance existing services in Western Sydney by providing a high-level quality of care and additional support, tailored to each client.
“Caring for a loved one at home is challenging, but ultimately one of the greatest acts of love you can give,” said Alison.
“Our social workers provide psychosocial support and assistance navigating government and support agencies.
“Western Sydney is a diverse place. We’re fortunate to have an interpreter service and multiple languages spoken by our nurses.
“These include Mandarin, Cantonese, Thai, Laotian, Spanish, Egyptian Arabic, Zulu, Swahili, French, Italian, Hindi, Punjabi, Tagalog (Philippines) and Tamil.”
To access the service, clients can either obtain a referral from a GP or medical specialist, or there is also the option to self-refer.
