Christmas campaign to help lonely seniors

It’s traditionally a time of family and festive celebrations, but Christmas can be a difficult time for people experiencing loneliness and isolation.

To help tackle the issue, Silver Chain will provide a friendly voice to clients who are likely to be by themselves as part of a 12 Calls of Christmas campaign.

As the festive spirit ramps up in Perth, support workers and contact centre staff are nominating clients who would welcome a phone call and a friendly chat on Christmas Day.

Last year’s inaugural campaign was a huge success with volunteers reaching out to a total of 64 clients across WA.

A dedicated team will continue the new tradition by making Christmas Day phone calls to clients at risk of loneliness.

Silver Chain customer service administrator Kayleen Head said: “For lots of us  Christmas is a happy and busy time, but for some older people the festive season offers little to celebrate.

“Feeling lonely can happen all year round but it’s often at Christmas that people can become particularly isolated and need additional support,” she added.

“Dedicated Silver Chain staff and volunteers are kindly volunteering their time to call lonely or isolated clients on Christmas Day.

“It’s a feel-good phone call to a client that checks on their well-being and lets them know we’re thinking about them – and it’s a very rewarding experience for our volunteers.”

Social centres and volunteer manager Brad Bell said: “The 12 Calls of Christmas campaign is a natural extension of the work we do to minimise social isolation through Silver Chain’s social centres and volunteer programs.

“Engaging seniors in meaningful, wellness approach activities helps enable them to stay at home, keep well and maintain their independence as much as possible,” he added.

“Volunteers and staff work together year-round to provide these meaningful experiences, so we are delighted to provide a friendly voice to clients who are home alone at Christmas.”
