A humble fundraiser has bloomed into a popular community event which helps keep a family’s memories alive.
The family of Philip Kirwan-Ward held the first Lily Day in 2013 to fundraise for Silver Chain’s palliative care service in his memory.
Each year the family opens their home and invites locals to come and pick armfuls of lilies from their paddocks – all for a gold coin donation.
Local businesses and artists support the cause by donating raffle prizes and a volunteer flower wrapping service gives the finishing touch to bouquets.
More than $36,000 has been raised to support the Jandakot Hospice Base near Perth, including $11,000 from this year’s event.
“Each year, we’re astonished at how much people want to help,” said Philip’s daughter, Janette.
“We just love that it’s a family event and it’s growing through the community – it’s old-fashioned and that’s what dad would have liked.”
