Ron* was working as an engineer, and had always enjoyed making and tinkering with things, when he experienced a stroke at 63 and had to stop doing many of the things he loved.
With all the new time on his hands, in an endeavour to keep Ron busy and in touch with family and friends, his wife Trish* tried to teach him how to use a desktop computer but he found it too overwhelming.
When their niece brought her iPad over, and showed Ron how easy it was to use, he decided he’d like to have his own and asked Silver Chain if one could be purchased through his Home Care Package.
A few weeks later, Ron received his iPad and it made a big difference to his life. Trish explained how Ron was now able to independently manage emails and communications from his family and friends.
“Until now he’s been reliant on me to access emails on the computer. Our children have recently moved away and have been sending pictures of the grandchildren in their new home, and Ron has loved being able to see them,” Trish said.
With all the medical appointments Ron has to attend, Trish has also noticed a great improvement in his ability to pass the time, keeping busy on his iPad. Where he’d previously feel bored and restless, being unable to read the small print magazines provided, Ron is now happily interacting with others in the waiting room.
“Receiving the iPad has given Ron a new interest and enabled him to socialise with people like he used to when working. It has made him feel involved again. It has made him smile again.”
