Silver Chain has partnered with Medibank, Australia’s largest health insurer, to trial a palliative care at home service that will provide their members with high quality end of life care in the comfort of their own home.
When a Medibank member in the Perth metropolitan area is referred to our Hospice Care Service, they will be invited to join the trial and have the care they receive fully covered by their health insurance.
Silver Chain Director Clinical Operations, Palliative, David Larmour, said Silver Chain is pleased to be working with Medibank, a likeminded organisation, to provide their members with access to world class in-home palliative care.
“We are proud Medibank has recognised our service as a best-practice model of specialist community palliative care and we look forward to working with them to support their members just as we do our own clients,” David said.
Those Medibank members participating in the trial will receive intensive support to improve their quality of life through care delivered by the Silver Chain Hospice Care Service’s multidisciplinary team.
Medibank General Manager Utilisation Management, Rebecca Bell is also very supportive of the trial and its ability to provide members a high quality of care in the way they would like it.
“Medibank acknowledges that approximately 70 per cent of Australians want to die in their homes – yet only about 14 per cent do so,” Rebecca said.
“We believe that through funding this market leading service, it will provide Medibank members and their families greater choice and flexibility of services to better navigate the end of life.”
The trial will be evaluated and both Silver Chain and Medibank expect the results to show how the in-home palliative service provides an excellent standard of end-of-life care and an improved member and carer experience.
