Clients to benefit from innovative exercise equipment
Silver Chain’s Social Centres give clients the opportunity to interact with others in a comfortable home like environment while participating in a range of fun activities such as cooking, gardening and flower arranging.
It’s a service that not only encourages individuals to maintain or learn important skills that allow them to continue living at home but it also provides carers and families with respite.
Falls are a leading cause of disability among older adults. However, exercise programs have been shown to be effective in reducing the risk of falling and the rate of falls because they can improve muscle strength, flexibility and balance.
Silver Chain General Manager, Home Support Service, Anne-Marie Cox, said Silver Chain’s vision is to develop a Seniors Exercise Precinct featuring a gardening shed, café and a specialist senior’s outdoor activity park within the grounds of the Mandurah Social Centre.
“As we age, many people do not regularly engage in as much physical activity as they would have in the past and this initiative will provide a safe supervised environment to promote physical activity focussing on muscle strength, functional and balance improvements and improving general health status overall,” Anne-Marie said.
“We intend to purchase equipment for our Mandurah Social Centre that has been specially designed and tested in other parts of the world, to accommodate the needs of older people and encourage participation in physical activity.
“Clients will be able to focus on maintaining mobility through balance training to assist in the prevention of falls. They will also be able to practise movements that are crucial to mobility, such as sitting to standing and step ups.
“Whilst we have seen this concept work successfully in other parts of Australia and internationally, Silver Chain will be the first in Western Australia to invest in this innovative equipment and build an exercise precinct for seniors.”
With the support of our generous donors, we can ensure this service is even better placed to help people live independently and confidently in their own homes and communities by providing an opportunity to stay strong and healthy through exercise.
Silver Chain is excited about the potential this project has in helping people be more active through outdoor exercise whilst socialising and enjoying the fresh air and sunshine.
