Sands of Time – Uncovering confidence through creativity
Silver Chain clients from Mandurah, Rockingham and Fremantle teamed up with local artist Carol Hazel to create Sands of Time, an entry in Wearable Art Mandurah.
Winner of the Powertex award, Sands of Time is a garment inspired by the lives of 20 Silver Chain clients and their childhood memories of the coast.
Silver Chain Social Centre Co-ordinator, Mandy Holmshaw, said the project has been a priceless experience for many Silver Chain clients.
“Whilst the garment is a stunning piece of art, it has been the personal journeys of individual Silver Chain clients that have been the most beautiful,” Mandy said.
“Carole, the artist, has done a fantastic job in empowering our clients and giving them the confidence to be creative.
“And that confidence is infectious – it has breathed a new sense of meaning and value into their lives. You can see the sense of pride on their faces when they talk about the project.
“For many of our clients, the process of creating the garment has been the most rewarding.”
The project has allowed clients to create new friendships and reminisce each step of the way, sharing stories and working together towards a common goal.
Close to 20 of our clients played a part in the garments creation, which takes inspiration from their memories of our blue oceans and sandy beaches. “If a picture tells a thousand words, then this garment tells many more,” Mandy said.
