Memory boxes become lasting memories

The volunteers who support Silver Chain’s Hospice Care Service have started gifting memory boxes to some families of clients nearing the end of their life.

The box contains a series of cards with each carrying a prompt for the family and their loved one to recall and document special memories they have shared.

Hospice Care Service client, Paula, said she greatly appreciated this small gesture as she had been struggling to find a way to leave messages to her husband and children in a way that wasn’t tacky or frightening.

“When Silver Chain nurse Helen brought this box around there was so many questions on the cards, I didn’t need to think of anything,” Paula said.

“The cards make things so much easier. They even made me laugh, some of the things that I could remember and write down.

“I think that is what counts, to leave something behind for my loved ones that will make them smile. Now they will be able to read and remember me.”

The memory box is a meaningful inclusion to the Hospice Care Service and becomes a lasting memory for the family.
