Bariatric chairs are designed to provide people with stability and security when receiving medical treatments.
Bariatrics – the branch of medicine that deals with the study and treatment of obesity.
Clinical bariatric chairs range from $15,000 to $20,000 each and feature wider seats and hydraulic lifts and recliners to help people get in and out of the chair.
They also provide safety and support for treating nurses and physicians.
Tim Hayes has been a Silver Chain client for several years and he recently worked with Silver Chain and health care equipment supplier Unicare, to improve the design of a new bariatric chair.
“Silver Chain invited me to test out a new chair they were thinking of using,” Tim said.
“As one of the biggest guys that comes into the clinic, I was happy to be involved and share my ideas because past chairs have had some issues.
“I didn’t feel safe in some of the older chairs. They were slippery, not wide enough and they had issues with not holding their height. You felt like you were going to fall forwards off the chair.
“The new chair I tested was much better, but I thought it could use some improvements.
“I suggested thicker and firmer padding to sit on, and more stable arm rests. I tested the chair again and I feel they got it right as I felt much safer and secure on it.”
Silver Chain Clinical Nurse Consultant Manager Lynn Brown said it was important to have fit-for purpose equipment for the safety of both clients and nurses.
“Having the right equipment allows us to place more focus on our clients so we can provide the very best person-centred care,” Lynn said.
“Whether it’s having a specially designed bariatric chair, state of the art ultrasonic debridement devices or new and smarter infusion pumps, they are all vital in ensuring we can provide the highest quality health care and comfort and confidence for our clients as well.
Thanks to Tim’s input, Silver Chain now has a custom designed bariatric chair that is more comfortable for our clients and safer for our staff. Thank you, Tim!
