Desalination Plant's $10,000 Donation to Support South West Community

Thanks to the Water Corporation and the Southern Seawater Desalination Plant joint venture partners Technicas Reunidas, Valoriza Agua, AJ Lucas and WorleyParsons; Silver Chain's clients living in the south west and ultimately the local communities of Myalup and Binningup will greatly benefit from a $10,000 donation.

Bernadette Durrell, Silver Chain's Regional Manager South West says funds will be used to support clients living locally.

"Silver Chain appreciates the kind support of the Southern Seawater Desalination Plant employees and joint venture partners as a result of their safety initiatives which will enable us to purchase much needed and vital telehealth equipment.

"We recognise that access to telemonitoring equipment for people with chronic diseases enables them to better understand their own health and have greater control over the management of their disease. It has been demonstrated to have a positive impact on the number of hospital admissions for some people who have chronic disease. This donation will enable our service in the south west to expand the number of devices we currently hold.

"Silver Chain will also use some of the funds to support the use of other telehealth technology, including our staff using their mobile telephones and tablets to capture wound pictures which can be sent to and viewed by general practitioners or clinical nurse specialists to review and provide advice for ongoing management. The use of telehealth technology also assists us to facilitate appointments for people living in the south west with specialist services in the Perth metropolitan area, saving the need to travel vast distances," says Bernadette.

Scott Moorhead, Water Corporation South West Regional Business Manager says, workers on the Southern Seawater Desalination Plant had achieved 250,000 injury free man hours in the second stage of construction, a fantastic achievement.

"The project introduced a safety incentive to our 500 workers to achieve an injury free workplace - loss time injury and medically treated injury for a set period of time. They have now reached their goal and our workers chose to use their incentive to support Silver Chain," says Scott.

LINKED HEARTS, A SPECIAL GIFT THIS MOTHER'S DAY

Thanks to Landsdale Rose Gardens, their new rose 'Linked Hearts', will help raise vital funds to support Silver Chain.

Emma Kerley, Silver Chain's Relationship Marketing Manager says Silver Chain greatly appreciates the kind support of Landsdale Rose Gardens.

"From the sale of each rose bush, Landsdale Rose Gardens will donate 80 cents to Silver Chain to help support our services right throughout our state.

"With mother's day just around the corner, the 'Linked Hearts' rose bushes would make a perfect gift," says Emma.

The rose is described as 'delightfully fragrant' and is a pale pink shade featuring a darker centre which fades to almost white at the edge of the petals. Foliage is dark green, glossy and healthy and grows to around 1.5m high by 1.2m wide.

Peter Nosow, of Landsdale Rose Gardens says the 'Linked Hearts' rose was launched at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show and is available in May for purchase from Plantworld Nursery Mart, Bunnings, Mitre 10, Home Hardware outlets and a number of mail order nurseries.

"If the rose is purchased from Plantworld Nursery Mart, 308 Landsdale Road, Landsdale, Plantworld will donate an extra $1.20 per rose bush sold, making a total donation of $2.00 per rose bush," says Peter.

Silver Chain to Accept Responsibility for Services Provided by Brookton Community Services Inc.

Over recent weeks Silver Chain has been involved in negotiations with the Shire of Brookton, Department of Health and Brookton Community Services Inc. to accept responsibility for the provision of HACC (Home and Community Care) and Health services currently provided by the Brookton Community Services Inc.

It is with great excitement that Brookton Community Services Inc. and Silver Chain can announce that on 19 March 2012, Silver Chain received endorsement from all key stakeholders to enable them to provide HACC and Health services to the Brookton community.

Carole Bain, Silver Chain's General Manager Country Services says Silver Chain will work in partnership with Brookton Community Services Inc to ensure client services are not disrupted.

"We will work together until the end of June 2012 to ensure clients experience a seamless transition from Brookton Community Services Inc to Silver Chain. Clients will not be impacted by any changes.

"It is important for Silver Chain and Brookton Community Services Inc to ensure clients continue to receive the same high quality services," explains Carole.

Silver Chain will provide full services to the Brookton community from Saturday, 30 June 2012. Until then both organisations are committed to working closely together to ensure a smooth transition of service delivery.

"Once services have been completely transferred to Silver Chain, we will be conducting community engagement workshops and will be inviting clients and the community to attend. The workshops will assist us making sure we provide services that continue to meet the needs of the community," says Carole.

"Silver Chain will also begin to liaise with Brookton Community Services Inc. employees and will encourage them to stay on and become part of Silver Chain's dedicated team."

Silver Chain is committed to supporting rural Western Australia and wishes to build upon the existing services already in place. This will help ensure the needs of the Brookton community are met now and well into the future.

Clayton Binns Is The Winner Of 2011 Young Carer Award

Thirteen year old Maddington teenager, Mr Clayton Binns, has been awarded the 'Young Carer Award' as part of the 2011 Young People Who Care Awards, which is co-hosted by Silver Chain, Carers WA and Woodside Energy Limited.

Clayton is the eldest of three boys and he is the main carer of his father Paul. Paul is a single parent and had previously worked and supported his family until his diagnosis of Motor Neuron Disease (MND). Motor Neuron Disease is a terminal condition there is no effective treatment for this rapidly degenerative neurological condition.

Ms Karlene Jordan, Neurological Community Nurse to Clayton's father Paul, notes that Clayton is an inspirational young man.

"For the past three years, I have had the pleasure of working with people with rapidly degenerative conditions such as MND, and I have never met two brothers who care for their father the way some adults will not. Their love for Paul is unconditional and Clayton is an amazing young men," said Ms Jordon.

Mr Chris McGowan, Silver Chain's Chief Executive Officer, noted that the Young People Who Care Awards is an opportunity to recognise exceptional Western Australians aged 10 to 18 years, who provide voluntary care to in our community.

"There are many young people who provide voluntary care to others and it's important that we recognise the special role that they play. Clayton and his brother Jake are wonderful examples to both their peers and the community and we wish them much success for the future. Congratulations Clayton," says Mr McGowan.

The Awards ceremony will be held at the Aboriginals Peoples Gallery, Parliament House on December 8, 2011.

Amy Jones Is The Winner Of 2011 Caring In The Community Award

Seventeen year old Amy Jones from Australind has been awarded the 'Caring in the Community Award' for providing voluntary care to her community as part of the 2011 Young People Who Care Awards.

Ms Jones' nominator, Mr John Hammett, noted that Amy is a fine example of a young person who cares about others and who has demonstrated maturity beyond her years.

"Amy volunteers approximately two days per week within the therapy and dementia departments at Bethanie Fields, an aged care facility in Eaton, providing assistance with occupational therapy and physiotherapy programs for residents. She also helps to organise various social events and activities and all whilst achieving excellent results at school.

"Furthermore, Amy has volunteered at Parkfield Primary School since 2005 organising costumes and props for a dance group, 'Boys in Boots and Jive'.

Mr Chris McGowan, Silver Chain's Chief Executive Officer, presented Miss Jones with the Caring in the Community Award and noted she is an amazing young woman who will go far.

"Amy is a wonderful example of a driven, hardworking and generous person and is a very deserving winner of the 2011 Caring in the Community Award. We wish her all the best with her future endeavours," said Mr McGowan.

The Young People Who Care Awards recognise exceptional young Western Australians aged between 10 and 18 years, who provide voluntary care to others. Other finalists for the 'Caring in the Community Award' were Dana Laurens (Kalgan), Megan Whisler (Pinjarra), Paulo Velho (Mount Pleasant), and Samuel Landro (East Fremantle).

The Awards ceremony will be held at the Aboriginals Peoples Gallery, Parliament House on December 8, 2011.

The Western Lions Win The 2011 Caring Together Award

As part of the 2011 Young People Who Care Awards, which is co-hosted by Silver Chain, Carers WA and Woodside Energy Limited, a group of young volunteers from Port Kennedy (known as The Western Lions), have been awarded the 'Caring Together Award' for providing assistance with a special needs dance class.

The special needs dance class is comprised of children with varying disabilities including visual and hearing impairment associated with Cerebal Palsy Autism, Fragile X Syndrome, West Syndrome, Down Syndrome and many more physical and intellectual disabilities. The Western Lions include Kayla de-Vasconcellos, Tammy de-Vasconcellos, Lucas Merau, Jovan Kereopa, Kate O'Keefe, Belinda O'Keefe, Taylor Blake and Daniella Dos-Santos, who have been volunteering with the dance class for two years.

Ms Jessica Gatenby, Dance Instructor at Western Cheersport, notes that The Western Lions are a committed, consistent group who dedicate one hour a week to assist children with disabilities to integrate into fitness and dance.

"This is a beautiful bunch of young carers that have the potential to change lives but they just don't know it yet. They have such a mature approach to working with the children and unconsciously help to diminish barriers as they liaise, communicate, include and work together with respect and dignity," said Ms Gatenby.

"The Western Lions play a significant role in the lives of disabled children and the Port Kennedy community and I am pleased to award them the 2011 Caring in the Community Award. Congratulations Western Lions; you should be very proud of your efforts" said Mr McGowan.

Silver Chain's Eneabba Service Temporarily Diverted to Leeman due to White Ants

On 17 November 2011, Silver Chain temporarily closed its premises in Eneabba due to white ant activity in the newer part of the building around the clinic and emergency treatment areas. However, no white ant damage was detected in the original building.

For safety reasons patients have been diverted to Silver Chain Health Service in Leeman, until further inspections of the building were carried out.

On 28 November, Silver Chain was advised to demolish the area of the building that is affected by the white ants. This is the most efficient and cost effective way to repair the damage.

Carole Bain General Manager Country Services said, "We are committed to the continuation of our services in Eneabba and aim to resume our services in the community as soon as possible. In the meantime, our services will be available in Leeman, which has been standard practice during seasonal closures."

"Our intention is to utilise the old clinic as our temporary clinic and emergency treatment area as soon as we complete some modifications to meet licensing standards. We expect the clinic to open for business by the end of January 2012." Carole said.

The demolition and construction of the new building is scheduled to commence in February 2012, with expected completion May/June 2012.

Silver Chain's Kelmscott Wound Clinic Moves To Maddington To Offer More

This Friday, November 25 2011, Silver Chain will be relocating their Kelmscott Wound Care Clinic and Continence Management and Advice Service (CMAS) clinic, to Maddington.

Ms Sue Linton, Silver Chain Clinical Nurse Consultant Manager, notes that the organisation is committed to providing ongoing care to our clients in a clinic environment and the relocation will allow for this.

"To be able to further develop and expand our capability to provide quality wound care and continence management advice services, we are relocating to Silver Chain's Maddington Service Centre. This will place us in a better position to offer a service to clients both south and north of Maddington, from a fully equipped facility, and will allow for increased staff numbers," said Ms Linton.

The new centre, located at 1938 Albany Highway, Maddington will open to the public on 26 November 2011.

Kalgoorlie Carers Luncheon Celebrates Carer's Week

Silver Chain's Commonwealth Respite and Carelink Centre will be holding a Luncheon on Wednesday 19 October 2011, from 11:00am - 2:00pm at Kingsbury Park in Kalgoorlie to celebrate carers as part of Carer's Week.

Ms Gloria Moyle, Silver Chain Commonwealth Respite and Carelink Co-ordinator, notes that Carers Week is a week for all Australians to reflect on the contribution of unpaid family carers in their community and to consider doing something in return for a carer they know.

"Carers Week 2011 runs from 16 - 22 October 2011 and is Australia's annual celebration of family carers. Each year, thousands of Australians take the time to recognise the wonderful contribution that carers make and this year, we encourage everyone to support the amazing work that they do and their valuable contribution to the community," said Ms Moyle.

"Carers Week aims to recognise, support and celebrate Australia's carers and our Luncheon aims to celebrate the wonderful carers in Kalgoorlie. There will be entertainment from the South Kalgoorlie Primary School Choir and H2J Performing Arts Centre in what will be a fun day for carers and care recipients."

Silver Chain Volunteer A Finalist In The WA Senior Of The Year Awards

Ms Kate O'Brien, Silver Chain volunteer, is a finalist in the 2011 WA Senior the Year Awards, Community Award category. The Awards celebrate the importance of seniors to local communities and to Western Australia with Ms O'Brien nominated for her outstanding contribution to volunteering and her dedication to the Walpole community.

Ms O'Brien became a Silver Chain volunteer in 1992 after nurses and Home Support Services staff cared for her husband through a prolonged terminal illness. She has been the President of the Silver Chain Walpole Branch Committee since 1998 during which time she has played a pivotal role in raising $30,000 for the development of the new Silver Chain building which still exists today. She was instrumental in the establishment of the Op Shop and now famous fundraising event, the Easter markets.

"Kate is a Silver Chain Life Member and an active participant of the Walpole Health Service Advisory Committee. She has contributed enormously to the Walpole community as a volunteer and is a tower of strength in the town," said Mr Brad McKay, Silver Chain Volunteer Team Leader.

"When asked whether she would be attending the Award ceremony at the Burswood Entertainment Complex however, she said she wasn't sure because the Silver Chain Garden Party is to be held on the same day! Such is her dedication to Silver Chain and to her community and we are extremely proud of her.

"The WA Senior of the Year Awards is the premier award for a senior who demonstrates outstanding service, commitment or achievement. The nomination is well deserved and we wish her every success at the Award ceremony," concluded Mr McKay.

Esperance CRCC to Host Series of Free Morning Teas For Carers

Silver Chain's Commonwealth Respite and Carelink Centre (CRCC) is hosting a series of free morning teas for Carers in the Esperance region. The next event will be held on 15 September 2011 at the Lotteries House Conference Room on Forrest Street in Esperance, from 9:30am - 11:30am.

"Carers are invited to come along to meet with each other and service providers in an informal, friendly atmosphere," notes Ms Kylie Ryan, CRCC's South East Coastal Co‑ordinator.

"The aim of the morning tea is to provide Carers with the opportunity to network with each other and learn more about the support services available to them to assist them in their caring roles."

Silver Chain Pilots Telehealth Service in Carnarvon to Support Aboriginal Health

Silver Chain is currently conducting a trial in Carnarvon to determine whether their TeleHealth service can support Aboriginal health, in particular those with chronic diseases in rural and remote areas, and help close the health gap between Aboriginal people and other Australians.

Ms Joanna Smith, Silver Chain Research Support Manager, explains that TeleHealth uses information and communication technology to deliver health services over geographical distances. Silver Chain uses a home based, self-monitoring system where participants measure their own vital signs daily which may include blood pressure, weight, pulse rate, temperature and oxygen saturation levels. The results are then transmitted automatically via a standard telephone line to a secure website and monitored daily by highly skilled Silver Chain staff.

"Silver Chain Care Aides assist their clients to take their vital signs each day and our Nurses monitor the readings to look for any indications that the client is getting sick. Should a client's readings show deterioration, our nurses work with the client's GP to ensure the client is treated before they get too sick and need to be treated in hospital. Assisting individuals to be effective self-managers is a key component of quality care for people living with chronic conditions as it increases the likelihood of early detection of exacerbations and thereby reducing the likelihood of costly hospital admissions," says Ms Smith.

"The Carnarvon trial is expected to take 12 months to complete and is currently supporting 10 aboriginal clients who live in and around Carnarvon and who suffer from chronic disease such as diabetes, asthma, heart failure, kidney failure and high blood pressure.

"Previous trials undertaken at Silver Chain have demonstrated significant cost savings for the Australian health system while improving health outcomes for individuals living with chronic diseases. Patients reported benefits relating to increased self confidence, control and awareness in managing their condition, as well as an improved sense of security and reduced anxiety. We hope the Carnarvon trial will demonstrate similar benefits to the health of Aboriginals living in rural and remote areas where access to health practitioners is often limited and requires significant travel.

"The potential of this technology is enormous and is likely to have a significant impact upon patient care and the health system more generally. The possibilities are extensive and very exciting and we look forward to being able to improve the quality, efficiency and cost effectiveness of managing chronic illness for the Western Australian community," concluded Ms Smith.

Nominations For Young People Who Care Awards 2011 Close This Week!

Nominations for the 2011 Young People Who Care Awards are closing this Friday, 30 September. This is your last chance to nominate exceptional young carers aged between 10 and 18 years who provide voluntary care to others in their community.

All nominees will be recognised for the remarkable and selfless things they do for others and finalists, their special guests and their nominator will be invited to attend a special award ceremony at Parliament House later in the year. Finalists will also be eligible to apply to the Young People Who Care Scholarship Fund for three years following their selection. Finalists who are selected and live in country areas are also assisted with transport and accommodation to attend the Awards.

There are three categories for which people can nominate: the 'Caring in the Community Award'; 'Young Carer Award'; and the 'Caring Together Award'.

Silver Chain's Chief Executive Officer, Mr Chris McGowan, says young people who provide voluntary care make a real difference to the lives of others and it is important to recognise the special work that they do in the community.

"Some 40,000 young carers in Western Australia provide care and support to their loved ones. Silver Chain Staff Appointed To Government Advisory Panel For Seniors

Silver Chain's Research Director, Professor Gill Lewin, has been appointed to the Commonwealth Government's Advisory Panel on the Economic Potential of Senior Australians which is tasked with ensuring the potential of the older members of our community is considered in a range of policy debates.

The Advisory Panel has been established to ensure these considerations are injected into a range of contemporary policy debates, such as the opportunities created by the National Broadband Network for senior Australians. It will also examine how businesses and policy makers can assist senior Australians in their transition from the workforce into other valuable endeavours, such as supporting their families, mentoring, volunteering and community work.

"We wholly endorse and support Gill's appointment to this hand-picked Panel. Silver Chain's passionate staff are dedicated to providing quality health services in the Western Australian community and it is fantastic that Gill's success is being recognised on a government level," Mr Chris McGowan, Silver Chain Chief Executive Officer, notes.

Professor Lewin is also the President of the Australian Association of Gerontology, and a Professor at the Centre for Research on Ageing at Curtin University of Technology.

Silver Chain General Manager Appointed Adjunct Associate Professor

Mr Stephen Carmody, Silver Chain's General Manager of Health, was recently recognised by Curtin University's School of Nursing and Midwifery as an outstanding leader and awarded the honour of Adjunct Associate Professor in the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Health Sciences.

Mr Chris McGowan, Silver Chain's Chief Executive Officer, noted that the conferring of an Adjunct Associate Professor is awarded to nursing and midwifery leaders who have made an outstanding contribution to healthcare in Western Australia.

"Mr Carmody's nursing career is exceptional. He has held a number of prominent positions in the health arena including Chief Executive Officer/Director of Nursing at St John of God Hospital. His hospital was awarded the Australian Public Health Association Award for Excellence and a WorkSafe Gold Award," said Mr McGowan.

"The conferring of title is recognition of the significant leadership role that Steve has played in healthcare delivery and development, and highlights the important work undertaken every day by all our clinical teams in the delivery of Silver Chain's services."

"We are incredibly proud of Stephen and our passionate staff at Silver Chain who are dedicated to providing quality health services in the Western Australian community," concluded Mr McGowan.

New Carer And Aged Care Information Booth Assists The Community

Silver Chain's Commonwealth Respite and Carelink Centre (CRCC) has established an information desk at the Safety Bay Library to provide all members of the public with free access to information relating to their carer respite and aged care requirements.

Ms Jane Miller, Commonwealth Respite and Carelink Centre Senior Co-ordinator, notes that a carer is anyone who provides regular care and assistance for someone who is frail aged or lives with a disability, chronic condition or mental illness. Support through flexible services is vital to ensure they can continue to assist those in need in the community.

"Caring for someone can be hard work. Respite care enables carers to sustain their ongoing responsibilities, as well other commitments or personal needs, by providing them with a break. CRCC provides respite care for a few hours, a day, a night, or even longer and can also be provided in times of emergency," said Ms Miller.

"The booth contains a free dedicated phone line which puts callers straight through to a CRCC team member. Callers can query whether they are eligible for support services, apply for services, ask for assistance on behalf of someone else, refer a patient or client or make any other enquiry related to support options for carers.

"By providing access to this information service, we hope to assist to unidentified carers within the community. Many carers already have an awareness of the services CRCC can offer, however members of the general public who might not consider themselves to be carers, will now have a place to visit where they can make a call and find out if our programs can assist them," said Ms Miller.

This is the first information booth to be up and running, however there are plans to establish two in each region which we will progress over the coming months.

A joint initiative with the City of Rockingham and CRCC, the information booth is located in the Safety Bay Library at 197 Safety Bay Rd, Safety Bay.

Silver Chain is excited to launch a range of TeleCare Solutions which work in conjunction with our CareLink Personal Alarm and are designed to support people to live independently in their own home.

Ms Elizabeth Boyd, Access Care Network Australia, Silver Chain Support Manager, explains the benefit of the assistive technology sensors.

"Our CareLink Personal Alarm is a small pendant that is worn around the neck and can be activated up to 80 metres from an alarm unit. When our clients need assistance, they simply press the button on the pendant which activates the alarm to call the 24 hour, seven day a week Silver Chain response centre. Highly trained staff will answer the call and respond immediately which might involve contacting the client's nominated responders or emergency services," says Ms Boyd.

"Packages to detect falls and seizures are available as well as other sensors such as smoke detectors, bed/chair occupancy sensors and intruder 'panic' alerts. Packages are also available to assist people in wheelchairs and people with dementia."

"The feedback that we have about the products has been incredible with many clients noting that the products have potentially saved their lives. Our range of TeleCare products give our clients and their loved ones peace of mind in the event of an emergency.

Albany Commonwealth Respite and Carelink Centre Moves

Previously located at The Link Centre, St Emilies Way in Albany, Silver Chain's Commonwealth Respite and Carelink Centre (CRCC) has relocated to Lotteries House, North Road, Albany, Western Australia.

Ms Jenny Dodson is the Great Southern Co-ordinator and is responsible for all areas from Denmark to Katanning, to Bremer Bay and everywhere in between. Services offered in these areas include the provision of information on health and service providers and respite options.

Silver Chain Free Mental Health Education Sessions Support The Community

Silver Chain Mental Health Education and Advisory Program offers free mental health education sessions to support all primary carers and community groups as well as health and community service providers who support people with mental health disorders.

"Everyone knows someone with a mental health problem and our Mental Health Education and Advisory Program seeks to enhance the knowledge and ability of those caring and responsible for people with mental health illnesses," says Ms Margaret Darby, Silver Chain Mental Health Educator,

"In the past 18 months, we have been working closely with the WA Country Health Service providing education about mental health to areas including the Wheatbelt, Carnarvon, Port Headland, Karratha and the Kimberley. In addition, we have forged a working relationship with Fremantle Multicultural centre providing education to families and carers from a wide background of different cultures.

"In the last financial year, the program directly assisted 743 families and carers as well as 1905 people who undertook the training as part of their workforce development. Attendees note that they gain knowledge and a greater understanding of mental health problems through our sessions and this assists them to cope better when dealing with individuals that suffer from mental health problems.

"The Program, available for carers of individuals with mental health problems, runs Monday to Friday from 8:30am - 5:00pm and sessions are available in most areas in Western Australia.

"Silver Chain's Mental Health Team is funded by the Mental Health Commission and consists of mental health educators who offer an education, referral and advisory service. Passionate about what they do, our Mental Health Nurses are very experienced and have backgrounds in inpatient and community nursing and in the education system training student nurses," concluded Ms Darby.

Blue Skies - Helping Children Cope With Death

Silver Chain will again be running Blue Skies; an innovative program developed by palliative care social workers, for children aged between eight and twelve years old, who are grieving the loss of a parent or primary caregiver.

Mr Brad McKay, Silver Chain Volunteer Services Team Leader, notes that Blue Skies provides a safe, fun filled and supportive environment connecting children who are grieving, and teaches them how to feel safe to speak about their feelings.

"Blue Skies educates about loss, grief and change through psycho-educational sessions, puppets, play, art (paint, sand), music, and ritual. This assists children to recognise, name and develop an awareness of the variety of emotions associated with death, and express these emotions. Children will explore their feelings and learn to identify their strengths that can help them through their grieving process, and develop coping strategies and trust," said Mr McKay.

"Bringing children together who are experiencing a similar life change reduces the isolation associated with bereavement and enables them to give and receive support in a shared creative environment."

The next workshop will be held on 11 - 12 October 2011 (during school holidays) from 9:00am - 3:00pm with all refreshments provided. Free for all bereaved children aged 8 -12 years, Blue Skies is held at Scarboro Surf Life Saving Club, in Scarborough Beach.

Parents from children who have attended the program note that their children are more willing and open to talk about their emotions and can express themselves more openly.

"I would strongly recommend this program as it provided a supportive, creative environment for my child to explore her loss and grief," said one parent.

Silver Chain Home Hospital Continues To Alleviate Pressure On Hospitals

Last financial year, Silver Chain Home Hospital provided hospital level care for 12,185 people from the comfort of their home - lessening the risk of infection and encouraging a faster recovery, significantly reducing the need for hospital presentations, and helping to alleviate the current pressure on the public health system.

Dr Roslyn Carbon, Silver Chain Home Hospital Director, notes that Silver Chain Home Hospital provides care for a range of illnesses in the home for patients who would otherwise require hospitalisation.

"Treatment is available for ambulatory care sensitive conditions requiring IV antibiotics, anticoagulation therapy, rehydration therapy etc and this also enables patients to return home sooner after an in-patient admission," said Dr Carbon.

"The service runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week in the Perth metropolitan area and includes the Priority Response Assessment; a hospital avoidance service which clinically assesses patients in their home within four hours. This reduces the need for the patient to go by ambulance to the Emergency Department and by treating patients safely at home, the risk of infection is reduced and patients often recover sooner. Over 650 patients per day are currently receiving care under this service and consequently, Silver Chain Home Hospital is successfully alleviating the pressure on the public health system," concluded Dr Carbon.

Silver Chain's Intergenerational Dementia Program Engages Geraldton Community

Silver Chain is currently piloting an Intergenerational Dementia Program designed to improve the quality of life for Dementia suffers and increase awareness and understanding of the disease in the local Geraldton community.

Ms Gill Walsh, Silver Chain Regional Services Manager, notes that the Program encourages participants to engage in life and reconnect with the community through enriching activities.

"Whilst providing a well earned break for carers, Silver Chain's Intergenerational Program also seeks to alleviate depression and loneliness for people with Dementia. This is done through encouraging social interaction with preprimary and primary school aged children which we understand disrupts the repetitive behavior patterns often demonstrated by Dementia suffers, in a positive way," said Ms Walsh.

"Held two days per week for four hours, the Program will include a playgroup session, sensory stimulation activities, assisting children with their reading and spelling skills and preparing afternoon tea with Silver Chain. The Program is open to anyone who is suffering from Dementia and the only cost to clients will be for lunch.

"We are really excited about this Program and believe that it has a real potential to assist those in need and, more broadly, increase the community's capacity to maximize its health and wellbeing," concluded Ms Walsh.

Silver Chain Offers Free Health Checks at 2011 Dowerin Field Days

As part of their ongoing commitment to increase the community's capacity to maximise its health and wellbeing in rural and remote areas, Silver Chain will once again be conducting free blood pressure checks at Site 82 in the Lifestyle Pavilion at the 2011 Dowerin Machinery Field Days, August 24 - 25.

Silver Chain's country services are delivered throughout regional Western Australia; from Carnarvon in the north, to Walpole in the south and to Eucla in the east from 16 community care service centres and 11 remote posts.

"Last financial year, Silver Chain delivered over 180,000 individual occasions of service in rural and remote areas. Silver Chain Geraldton Is Moving To Brand New Premises

The Silver Chain Geraldton Service Centre will be moving on Friday, 15 July 2011. The new purpose built Lotteries House building features modern facilities which will ensure Silver Chain is in a better position to meet the health care needs of the Geraldton community.

Ms Carole Bain, Silver Chain Country General Manager, notes that the new facilities are designed to encourage communication with industry and the community and improve functionality and building access for staff and clients.

"The new Geraldton Service Centre is situated in a pleasant area, close to the city (but much quieter than the previous location). It boasts a communal area for clients and staff, a meeting room with teleconferencing capability to encourage training opportunities and it will be among the first of the sites in Western Australia to be part of the National Broadband Network," said Ms Bain.

"This is a very exciting opportunity for Silver Chain to improve our access to health services in the community and through this opportunity for growth, we look forward to being able to increase the community's capacity to maximise its health and wellbeing."

Previously located at 85 Carson Terrace in Geraldton, the new address of the Silver Chain Geraldton base is 114 Sanford Street, Geraldton. It is anticipated that all services and operations will be functioning effective Monday, 18 July 2011 and there will be no disruption to services during this time.

Silver Chain Awarded 24 Consumer Directed Care Packages

Silver Chain has been awarded funding for 24 Consumer Directed Care Packages (CDC) to encourage personally tailored and flexible care options for clients with high care needs, in the Goldfields, Wheatbelt and Great Southern areas.

Ms Carole Bain, General Manager of Silver Chain Country Services, explains what this means for client care.

"The CDC funding allows clients to make choices about the types of care they access from a service provider which can include home help, personal care, allied health and nursing services. CDC also allows clients to choose how their services will be delivered and who will provide the services which means increased flexibility, choice and control over the available services.

"Silver Chain recently held a series of consumer consultation forums in Bunbury and metropolitan Perth to find out what services would be most sought after and beneficial to specific communities. It has been an excellent way to ensure people understand what assistance is available to them and how Silver Chain might be able to assist.

"Silver Chain is proud to have been selected as an approved provider to implement the Consumer Directed Care Packages and looks forward to implementing the Packages and increasing the community's capacity to maximise its health and wellbeing," concluded Ms Bain.

This funding has been provided by the Department of Health and Ageing.

Young At Heart - Recognising Silver Chain Rockingham Branch Committee Members

Silver Chain's Rockingham Branch Committee and Chief Executive Officer Mr Chris McGowan, recently celebrated a number of milestone birthdays and acknowledged the dedication of an exceptional group of 'young at heart' volunteers at a surprise luncheon.

"Six of our Rockingham volunteers are celebrating their 90^th birthdays this year and many of the 60 members of the Branch Committee have dedicated more than 25 years to volunteering with Silver Chain; a fantastic and much appreciated commitment," said Mr McGowan.

Silver Chain Rockingham Branch Committee President, Ms Maxine Byass, notes that she is privileged to work with such a committed and passionate group.

"The Rockingham Branch Committee is one of the most active of the Silver Chain Branch Committees and hold regular fundraising events throughout the year such as garage sales, fashion parades, raffles, hampers, sausage sizzles and gift wrapping. All donations go towards supporting Silver Chain in the Rockingham area," said Ms Byass.

"In the last financial year, we were able to raise over $20,000 which we put back into the community for projects such as home nursing and support the Silver Chain Respite Centre. We hold our meetings on the second Friday of each month at 1:30pm at Challenger Lodge Hall, Rockingham and we are always looking for new members who are passionate about supporting our community," concluded Ms Byass.

Silver Chain Cup Raises Needed Funds for Rural and Remote Western Australia

As part of Silver Chain's fundraising event to support the health of West Australians living in rural and remote areas, the 2011 Silver Chain Cup was held on Friday, 17 June 2011. 92 golfing enthusiasts took part in an Ambrose tournament at Lake Karrinyup Country Club - Western Australia's most exclusive golf course - and helped to raise money for much needed equipment.

Mr Chris McGowan, Silver Chain Chief Executive Officer, notes that funds raised from this year's golf day will assist Silver Chain to purchase specialised Telehealth equipment to support our services throughout the Western Australian community.

"The Telehealth unit is an innovative system used to prevent hospital admission for patients with chronic health conditions and allows their vital signs to be monitored remotely from the comfort of their own homes, by highly trained Silver Chain nurses," said Mr McGowan.

"We were very fortunate to have had beautiful weather for the golf day and, with thanks to everyone who supported us, the day was a great success. We raised enough money to purchase 15 Telehealth units to assist Silver Chain in increasing the community's capacity to maximise its health and wellbeing across Western Australia."

Through its Continence Management Advice Service (CMAS), Silver Chain is proud to support World Continence Week 2011 from June 20 - 26, as we highlight the importance of seeking professional advice for continence concerns.

The theme for World Continence Week 2011 in Australia and New Zealand is 'exercise and the pelvic floor' however Silver Chain's CMAS assists clients with a variety of concerns as Ms Carolyn Lawrence, CMAS Project Manager, highlights.

"CMAS is a well established service funded by the West Australian Government. We support clients through personalised management strategies including continence management plans, appropriate routines, bladder training, dietary suggestions, counselling and advice," said Ms Lawrence.

"In Australia, bladder problems affect more than one in three women and over one in 10 men. Bowel problems are also very common, yet only one third of people who have symptoms seek help from a health professional. We encourage those with concerns to get advice early as occasional symptoms often progress. Something can be done and our trained nurses understand and are here to help.

"If your case is more advanced, you may qualify for free pads or products up to the value of $480 per year, delivered to your home. We can discuss what's available and help you make the best choice. If you are already receiving products or are eligible for another scheme, you may also be able to receive an additional allowance each year for free pads or products through CMAS.

"This service is available through a number of Silver Chain clinics within Western Australia. If you live in the country and are a long way from a clinic, you may be able to have your assessment with a nurse over the telephone at no cost to you. Home visits are available in special circumstances should you be unable to travel to a clinic for health reasons," concluded Ms Lawrence.

Silver Chain recently honoured International Nurses' Day by recognising their compassionate and dedicated staff as part of the Silver Chain Excellence in Nursing and Leadership Awards.

Mr Chris McGowan, Silver Chain Chief Executive Officer, was proud to attend the ceremony at Silver Chain House to announce Award winners and congratulate successful nominees.

"The Silver Chain Excellence in Nursing Awards acknowledge a number of nurses who have been nominated by clients, peers and managers as outstanding examples of nurses demonstrating excellence in nursing practice," said Mr McGowan.

Silver Chain Supports National Palliative Care Week

Silver Chain's metropolitan Palliative Care Service, one of Australia's largest community based palliative care services, will be supporting National Palliative Care Week 2011 (May 23 - 28, 2011).

Mr Mark Cockayne, Silver Chain Director of Palliative Care Services, notes that National Palliative Care Week is an opportunity to help everyone in our community think about the issues surrounding death and also to learn more about palliative care, loss and grief.

"Palliative care is not simply terminal care, but end of life care. Silver Chain Hospice Care Service is a community based service which works together with the palliative care units and hospital services to provide a seamless and integrated range of support services to address each person's nursing, medical, psychosocial and spiritual needs," says Mr Cockayne.

"The service provides symptom management such as pain control, psychological support and counselling services which also extend to family and carers. Our expert professional team is comprised of registered nurses, doctors, enrolled nurses, care aides, counsellors, chaplains and trained volunteers. A registered nurse with palliative care skills is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to ensure we meet the clients' needs, whenever they need us."

On average, 2,200 people will be admitted to Silver Chain's Hospice Care service each year and the positive feedback from clients and their families is a testament to the high level of care and support that Silver Chain staff provide to the community.

"The service we received from Silver Chain was way beyond expectation," notes a client from Fremantle. "The support we received was, at all times, discreet and sympathetic to our situation. The care, compassion and thoughtfulness was personal yet entirely professional. I cannot express in words how highly I appreciate the care we received."

2011 is the International Year of the Volunteer+10, and in celebrating National Volunteer Week recently, Silver Chain awarded the 2011 Silver Chain Volunteer of the Year Awards to a handful of its best.

Mr Brad McKay, Silver Chain Volunteer Team Leader, notes volunteers play an integral role within Silver Chain providing significant hours in volunteer support across all operational areas.

"Dedicated volunteers have been supporting Silver Chain, our clients and staff throughout Silver Chain's history. Our trained volunteers enhance the quality of service we provide to people and their families through a range of activities including providing carer respite, companionship, conversation and social support," Mr McKay said.

"We have over 400 volunteers working with us, more than half of whom help our clients and families in country and remote locations and demand for the invaluable support of volunteers, is constant.

"All volunteers deserve to be recognised but the Silver Chain Volunteer of the Year Awards are presented to those who go above and beyond and truly dedicate significant energy to volunteering within Silver Chain."

The 2011 Silver Chain Volunteer of the Year for Hospice Care Services was awarded to Ms Marie Willans for her dedication to Silver Chain Hospice Care Service for the past 18 years.

"Marie is a true leader who has embraced change and supported her peers throughout her time with Silver Chain. She is a volunteering champion and we are so appreciative of her ongoing dedication and hard work with our Hospice teams," noted Mr McKay.

The 2011 Silver Chain Volunteer of the Year for Home Support Services was awarded to Ms Franca Mondi for her dedication and support to clients, staff and peers at the Fremantle Day Centre.

"Franca is always willing to help where it is needed and demonstrates excellent team work and a passion for her role at Silver Chain. Franca volunteers in the kitchen as a volunteer cook, providing meals to the clients who attend the multicultural day centre.

The 2011 Silver Chain Volunteer of the Year for Country Services was awarded to Mr Chris Ruffell for his dedication and volunteer support to clients, staff and peers at Silver Chain Bridgetown and the Warren Blackwood community.

"For Chris, nothing is too much trouble. The clients all say he is a caring gentleman who is genuinely interested in their stories and treats all of our clients with dignity and respect," said Mr McKay.

"Congratulations to all the winners and nominees, I am so proud to be involved with such a passionate group of people," concluded Mr McKay.

Silver Chain Receives Funding For Remote Area Health Centre

Silver Chain has received $2.6 million for a new multi-purpose, Remote Area Health Centre in Eucla to assist remote communities in receiving improved access to health care services.

Ms Carole Bain, Silver Chain Country Services General Manager, notes that the success of Silver Chain's funding application for a new health service building is fantastic.

"I am thrilled with the announcement made by Minister Nicola Roxon last week. As the nearest medical service is currently 700km to the west at Norseman and 500km to the east at Ceduna, it was quite critical that Eucla have a state-of-the-art medical facility," Ms Bain said.

The funding will provide Silver Chain and the Eucla community with a new multi-purpose, purpose-built building which includes a staff residence, a consultation room for visiting doctors and other health providers, two assessment beds and an observation bed.

Although only a few hundred people permanently reside in Eucla itself, Silver Chain provides access to health care for the many thousands of travellers who venture across the Nullabor each year.

"The new facility will be a great asset to the community, ensuring they can continue to have access to health services and that we can also provide adequate accommodation for our staff. It will be an important facility for clients and service providers. It will also be quite an event for the community when the building is finally completed and we look forward to that day in the foreseeable future!" concluded Ms Bain.

Silver Chain Rewards Volunteers For 20 Years Of Dedication

May 9 - 15 is National Volunteer Week and Silver Chain is marking the occasion by celebrating two particularly outstanding volunteers who have significantly contributed to Silver Chain and the community for the past 20 years.

In recognition of their 20 years of dedicated volunteering with Silver Chain, Mrs Daphne Cullen and Ms Annice Henderson will be attending the upcoming Volunteering WA National Volunteer Week Gala Dinner and Awards Presentation as Silver Chain representatives.

Ms Henderson has been a part of Silver Chain's Recollections Service, a service which records hospice clients' life stories or messages to leave to their family, for 17 years and says that volunteering with Silver Chain has been amazing.

"I have met such inspiring people through my work with Silver Chain and I would recommend volunteering to anyone! You don't need any special skills, you just need to be a caring person with some time to help those in need in your community," said Ms Henderson.

Mrs Daphne Cullen has assisted Silver Chain clients by providing Reiki, bereavement support and respite care as well as assisting with some administrative tasks.

"It's so good to help others and volunteering is such rewarding work. I am proud to be a Silver Chain volunteer," said Mrs Cullen.

Silver Chain Supports Wound Awareness Week

Dedicated to increasing the community's capacity to maximise its health and wellbeing, Silver Chain supports The Australian Wound Management Association's Wound Awareness Week which seeks to raise awareness of the burden of chronic, slow to heal wounds and improve standards of care.

Silver Chain Associate Professor of Domiciliary Nursing, Dr Keryln Carville, notes that there is a lack of understanding surrounding the severity and suffering experienced by people with slow to heal wounds and the services available in their community to support them. Wound Awareness Week is a great opportunity for these issues to be addressed.

"Almost 50 per cent of patients in Western Australia's public hospitals have one or more wounds at some point during their hospital stay and 20 to 25 per cent of the wounds are potentially preventable hospital-acquired injuries such as pressure ulcers and skin tears. With an estimated 270,000 Australians having problem wounds at any one time, wound management is one of Western Australia's most significant health issues," said Dr Carville.

"Approximately 70 per cent of Silver Chain's nurses' time is taken up by the assessment and management of wounds within a variety of clinical settings including client homes, clinics and aged care facilities. The complexity of the health care needs for clients receiving wound care in the domiciliary setting is varied and treatment options including client education and prevention strategies often involve a multidisciplinary approach including referral options to medical specialities, general practitioner involvement and the support of allied health disciplines.

"The development of the knowledge and skills of Silver Chain nurses in wound management is supported by comprehensive wound education modules and the expertise of Clinical Nurse Consultants, ensuring appropriate assessment and treatment options are implemented to either heal wounds or support and improve the quality of care of clients living with wounds.

"Wounds impact upon patients' personal lives and can put significant strain on the healthcare system so it is very important that wounds are managed according to the best practise models of care," concluded Dr Carville.

Silver Chain To Expand Health Care Services In Albany

As part of Silver Chain's commitment to the provision of healthcare services in rural and remote areas of Western Australia, we are implementing an additional 20 Extended Aged Care Packages (EACH) in Albany.

Established in 1946, Albany was the first country town in Western Australia to establish a Silver Chain nursing service. Since then, Silver Chain has noted an increased need for the provision of care services in the area.

Ms Carole Bain, Silver Chain Country Services General Manager, notes that the allocation of funding for EACH packages will result in increased access to high level aged care services for the Albany and surrounding communities.

"We are very excited to be extending our services in the Albany area. This increased funding will see more people being able to be supported in their own home, for longer, with the help of Silver Chain services," said Ms Bain.

"Furthermore, Silver Chain is currently awaiting the outcome of our application for funding as part of the Consumer Directed Care Packages. Should this request for funding prove successful, additional services will again be made available to the community through our eleven remote service centers throughout Western Australia.

Silver Chain Albany Branch Committee President Retires After 35 Years

After 35 years as a Silver Chain volunteer, and almost 23 years as Silver Chain Albany Branch Committee President, Mrs June Hodgson will be retiring on 18 July 2011.

Mrs Hodgson started her journey as a Silver Chain volunteer after Silver Chain provided care services for her father. Since then, she has become an integral part of the Albany Branch Committee and the Albany community itself.

Largely driven by her passion and supported by dedicated team members, the Silver Chain Albany Branch Committee has managed to raise tens of thousands of dollars for the Albany community through running a local "Not New Shop", holding raffles and street appeals, fetes and stalls. Late last year (and supported by the Albany Port Rotary Club and individual community members), the Silver Chain Albany Branch Committee raised an amazing $38,000 to purchase a community bus which will be used to take clients on outings.

The one time Mayor of Albany, Silver Chain Life Member (since 1994) and now Grandmother, June Hodgson notes she has always loved to help people.

"I have truly loved working with the Albany branch and will definitely miss it and the friendly faces I got so used to seeing every day. I now feel, however, that it's time that I hand over the reins to someone else and take a little time for myself to relax," said Mrs Hodgson.

Ms Lesley Pearson, Silver Chain Manager of Great Southern Regional and Remote Services, notes that Mrs Hodgson has been a Silver Chain stalwart and dedicated wholeheartedly to supporting people in need.

"June has been a fierce advocate for the Albany community and her enthusiasm will be sincerely missed. On behalf of Silver Chain, we wish her the very best for her future endeavours; hers will be big shoes to fill," said Ms Pearson.

Esperance CRCC To Host Series Of Morning Teas For Carers

"The aim of the morning tea is to provide Carers with the opportunity to link in with each other and learn more about the support services available to them to assist them in their caring roles."

Silver Chain Home Hospital General Practitioner Workshops A Success

Held on 4 March 2011, the Silver Chain Home Hospital General Practitioners Workshop, designed to encourage General Practitioners in metropolitan Western Australia to refer to Silver Chain Home Hospital, saw great success and attracted 38 health care professionals to the Esplanade River Suites in Como.

Dr Roslyn Carbon, Director of Silver Chain Home Hospital, notes that the feedback from both the GP Workshops and the Home Hospital program in general, has been very positive.

"Most of our Silver Chain Home Hospital clients have indicated that they appreciate the opportunity to receive hospital level care from the comfort of their own homes and under the governance of their GP," said Dr Carbon.

Workshop attendees commented that "the Workshop was very accessible, useful and comprehensive" and that "Silver Chain is showing the way forward for all of us!"

"This Workshop is a great opportunity for GPs to find out how they can play a part in reducing hospital presentations, reducing the pressure on public hospitals, seeing patients return home sooner after hospital admission and improving the responsiveness of the health care system as a whole, to meet growing demand," noted Dr Carbon.

"The Silver Chain Home Hospital General Practitioners Workshops have been approved by the RACGP QI & CPD Department for 40 Category 1 points in the 2011-2013 Triennium, and GPs who attend will be renumerated $880.00 (inc. GST) for the day," concluded Dr Carbon.

For safety reasons patients have been diverted to Silver Chain Health Service in Leeman, until further inspections of the building were carried out.

On 28 November, Silver Chain was advised to demolish the area of the building that is affected by the white ants. This is the most efficient and cost effective way to repair the damage.

The demolition and construction of the new building is scheduled to commence in February 2012, with expected completion May/June 2012.

Silver Chain's Telehealth trial for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) patients has nearly halved emergency department presentations, hospital admissions and the number of days spent in hospital, freeing up hospital beds for other patients.

Mr Daymon Joseph, Silver Chain Business Manager, notes that Silver Chain understands the importance of considering ways to improve the quality, efficiency and cost effectiveness of managing chronic illness and Telehealth is already proving to be a vital tool in supporting the health and wellbeing of the community.

"Telehealth is the use of information and communication technology to deliver health services over distance. Silver Chain has used the technology with outstanding results to demonstrate the benefits and financial viability of monitoring people with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)," said Mr Joseph.

"We used a home based self-monitoring system combined with remote monitoring of the patient's results by a Silver Chain Nurse. Participants measured their own vital signs daily, which included blood pressure, weight, pulse rate, temperature and oxygen saturation levels. The results were transmitted automatically via a standard telephone line to a secure website and monitored daily by the Telehealth nurse. Any data outside the set parameters was promptly identified and an intervention initiated.

"Assisting individuals to be effective self-managers is a key component of quality care for people living with chronic conditions as it increases the likelihood of early detection of exacerbations, thereby reducing the likelihood of costly hospital admissions.

"The results showed significant cost savings for the Australian health system while improving health outcomes for individuals living with COPD. Patients reported benefits relating to increased self confidence, control and awareness in managing their condition, as well as an improved sense of security and reduced anxiety.

"Furthermore, as the Telehealth equipment does not rely on fast speed broadband access, the results of this research could be extremely beneficial to people living with chronic disease particularly in rural and remote areas, where access to health practitioners is limited and often requires significant travel

"Telehealth also reduced the impact upon the family and carers and patients reported a high level of satisfaction with the user friendliness of the equipment and the monitoring service itself.

"This research has shown that remote monitoring of patient vital signs using Telehealth equipment can produce significant costs savings for Australia while improving health outcomes for individuals living with COPD. It is an innovative way of improving the efficiency and cost effectiveness in the management of chronic illness and importantly provides a service option that was well received and easily managed by older participants.

Silver Chain Home Hospital Workshops for Home-Based Hospital Care

Silver Chain is hosting a one day workshop on March 4, 2011 to equip General Practitioners to manage patients within Silver Chain Home Hospital; a program dedicated to providing hospital level care from the comfort of the patients' homes.

Silver Chain Home Hospital provides care in the home for patients who would otherwise require hospitalisation. Treatment is available for ambulatory care sensitive conditions requiring IV antibiotics, anticoagulation therapy, rehydration therapy etc. All Silver Chain Home Hospital services include the option of home support services or allied health as required.

"The overall goal of Silver Chain Home Hospital is to reduce hospital presentations and the need for inpatient care for those patients for whom treatment can be delivered safely in the community," said Dr Roslyn Carbon, Silver Chain Home Hospital Director.

"Silver Chain Home Hospital also enables patients to return home sooner after an in-patient admission. This results in enhanced capacity of the community care sector, provides the opportunity for the patient to receive care in the comfort of their own home, and helps reduce the pressure on public hospitals," said Dr Carbon.

"The Silver Chain Home Hospital One Day Workshops will include information on Home Hospital clinical protocols, practices and governance and provides attendees with the opportunity to talk to General Practitioners already involved in the Home Hospital program about its success.

Topics covered include:

The safe management of conditions ranging from cellulitis and DVT to hyperemesis gravidarum in the patient's home
Casestudies to highlight communication and referral methods
Clinical governance
Home based investigations
Discussions surrounding the range of nursing services and 'home-help' available to keep your patient at home during an acute illness

This workshop has applied for 40 Category 1 points from the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP). In addition, to cover the costs of attending the workshop, Silver Chain will offer remuneration for the day, as well as training in suitable information technology.

Silver Chain Encouraged by Aged Care Reforms

Silver Chain is very encouraged by the Productivity Commission's Draft Report into Aged Care Reform.

Mr Chris McGowan, Silver Chain Chief Executive Officer, notes that reforms in aged care have long been necessary and initial reports of positive changes are encouraging.

"Recommendations which focus on finding alternatives to residential care, further developing restorative programs, promoting independence and wellness for more older Australians and person centred services tailored to meeting an individual's needs, are essential to the long term viability of the aged care sector," said Mr McGowan.

"We know that in the vast majority of cases, people want to remain independent, in their own homes and stay connected with their community. For most, entry into residential care is a last resort. This is something that many residential care providers have already realised and are now offering Community Care Packages to clients in their homes.

"Many of these changes have been outlined in the Productivity Commission's Draft Report into Aged Care Reform and the Federal Government is to be applauded for recognising the future needs of Australians.

"Research indicates that 70 per cent of restorative care recipients do not require ongoing support services and their quality of life is significantly enhanced as a result of receiving these services.

"Whilst we are yet to see how these changes will be implemented, it appears that the Commission has grasped the core issues and challenges facing the sector and has produced some truly visionary initiatives to address the projected needs of Australians well into future.

"Comments to date have focussed largely on residential care, however most Australians have indicated they want a solution that keeps them out of a facility and keeps them in their own home, for longer.

"As Western Australia's largest provider of community care, Silver Chain welcomes and urges the Commission to follow through with these recommendations which, when implemented, will make possible a shift away from the traditional 'supply managed' system into a properly resourced demand led model.

"This will ensure entitlement to service for individuals who can, at their discretion, transfer from one service provider to another, thereby facilitating greater access to more community services for more Australians," concluded Mr McGowan.

Silver Chain has teamed up with Peak Kewdale to offer a Health Pit Stop to motorists at the fuel station on Wednesday, 17 March 2010 from 11.00am - 2.00pm.

Silver Chain Opens Doors To The Margaret River Community

Silver Chain will be holding a series of events in Margaret River from October 24 - 27 2011, to highlight the services we offer to support seniors' efforts to remain independent and in their own homes.

Silver Chain will be offering a free Health Pit-stop on October 24 2011 outside the IGA store on Bussell Highway in Margaret River. Members of the public are welcome to attend from 10:00am - 1:00pm to have their blood pressure and Blood Glucose Levels checked by Silver Chain nursing staff.

On Tuesday 25October 2011, Mr Richard Burns, Head Chef at Palandri Winery, will be holding a free cooking demonstration from 1:30pm - 3:30pm at the Silver Chain Day Centre, at 7 Farrelly Street, Margaret River. The demonstrations will focus specifically on cooking simple, nutritious meals for one person. All seniors in the community are invited to attend and afternoon tea will be provided.

On Wednesday 26October 2011, Silver Chain staff and volunteers from the Silver Chain Margaret River Service Centre will be running a cake stall outside IGA on Bussell Highway in Margaret River. A fundraising event, the staff are hoping to raise enough money to buy a height adjustable hospital bed for Silver Chain's Palliative clients in the community.

Thursday 27 October 2011 will see the Silver Chain Margaret River Day Centre have an Open Day and sausage sizzle. The day is a chance for members of the public to see what kind of activities clients take part in and see how the Day Centre interacts with other organisations in the community. Ms Pam McIntosh, Silver Chain Day Centre Co-ordinator, notes that the Day Centre has plenty of room for more clients and is excited about showcasing their fun activities to visitors.

"We want people to know that Silver Chain has a strong community focus and that we are there to help. Our Day Centre provides respite options for carers and our country healthcare services include medication prompts, domestic assistance (such as cleaning services), personal care services (such as showering, meal preparation, help with shopping) and wound care support where our nurses visit clients to monitor and dress wounds," said Ms McIntosh.

"The free Open Day will run from 10:00am - 2:00pm and we welcome everyone who feels they might benefit from our services to attend."
