About the awards

Young People Who Care is an annual awards program recognising the efforts of young people in Western Australia who help to provide care to others in our community.

Award Categories

Caring in the Community presented by Silver Chain.
Recognising a young person who provides voluntary care to a person or people in their community.

Young Carer presented by Carers WA.
Recognising a young person who cares for a family member with a disability or illness.

Caring Together presented by Woodside Energy Ltd.
Recognising an exceptional group of young people providing voluntary care to others in the community.

The rewards

Acknowledgement
All nominees receive a certificate to thank them for the amazing things they do for others.

Prizes
Finalists in each category will receive loads of great prizes.

Award Ceremony at Parliament House
All finalists, their special guests and the person who nominated them are invited to attend a special award ceremony at Parliament House on 22 September 2010, where the winners for each category will be announced.

Scholarship Program
Finalist from each category will have the opportunity to apply for scholarships to assist with their education, developing new community initiatives or to help sustain the community groups they are involved with.

Dowerin Field Days - 25 and 26 August 2010

As part of our ongoing commitment to increase the community's capacity to maximise its health and wellbeing in rural and remote areas, Silver Chain will be undertaking a Health Pit Stop from Site 83 in the Lifestyle Pavilion at the 2010 Dowerin Machinery Field Days.

If you are attending Dowerin Field Days, don't miss out on visiting our display and finding out about the services we offer and how you can access them. For a gold coin donation, we will be undertaking a Health Pit Stop where individuals can be screened quickly and non-invasively for three modifiable cardiovascular disease risk factors including blood pressure, body mass index and hip-to-waist ratio.

We will also be holding a raffle with tickets selling for $2 each (1^st prize - $10,000 cash, 2^nd prize - $3,000 cash, 3^rd prize - 2 nights' accommodation in Margaret River at Margaret River Tourist Park including lunch and escorted winery tour for two people). Each raffle ticket you purchase also enters you in a draw to win a Margaret River Chocolate Company hamper - this hamper raffle will be drawn at the end of each Dowerin Field Days.

Free Mental Health Awareness Training for Carers

Silver Chain and CRCC Offer Free Mental Health Awareness Training For Carers and Service Providers

The Commonwealth Respite and Carelink Centre (CRCC), in collaboration with Silver Chain, is pleased to offer paid and non-paid carers, service providers and community members with the opportunity to access a number of free mental health training sessions.

The Mental Health Awareness Training sessions offer training, advice and support for service providers and carers in rural and remote areas, and are part of Silver Chain's primary health care service which focuses on prevention, education and early intervention.

These sessions are designed to equip carers and service providers with the tools needed to feel more confident about caring for people with mental health issues.

Previous sessions held throughout Western Australia have been highly regarded, well attended and discuss a range of topics including:

Dementia
Stress Management
Elder Abuse
Depression
Major Psychiatric Disorders
Assertiveness Training
Challenging Behaviours
Personality Disorders
Psychotropic Medications
Drug and Alcohol Misuse

The sessions have been well attended and the feedback has been very positive. Some topics are suitable for both carers and service providers and participants are welcome to attend multiple classes. Sessions designed for service providers will have a maximum capacity of 25 people, however additional classes are likely to become available should this number be exceeded

The sessions have already run throughout the State, including in the metropolitan and lower Great Southern areas, as well as in the Wheatbelt and Pilbarra regions. Currently they are being offered in the Great Southern area, with the next session scheduled in Albany at the Albany Town Hall. The free Mental Health Awareness Training sessions will run from 28 - 30 June 2010 and all carers and service providers are welcome to attend.

Many carers are eligible to receive respite funding to attend the health sessions and in general to assist in the provision of continued care.

Silver Chain's Community Day - Thank You!

Held on Friday, 11 June 2010, Silver Chain's Annual Community Day saw Silver Chain volunteers, staff, and members of the public come together to promote and raise funds for Silver Chain health services.

Volunteers and staff wore brightly coloured clothing, shook collection tins, promoted merchandise and were on hand to offer balloons and information on how Silver Chain increases the community's capacity to maximise its health and wellbeing

Visitors to the Silver Chain marquee in the Murray Street Mall, Perth CBD were invited to participate in a Health Pit Stop where they had their blood pressure checked by a Silver Chain Registered Nurse. Participants included teenagers, the elderly and members of the local police force.

Mr Chris McGowan, Silver Chain Chief Executive Officer, notes the importance of fundraising initiatives to the community.

"Silver Chain provides quality, affordable health services including home care, palliative, emergency and family health care to Western Australia," said McGowan.

"More than 40,000 people rely on these services each year, enabling them to maintain links to the community by enhancing their health and independence. Events like the Community Day and Diving with the Sharks Appeal support Silver Chain's vital community care services.

"Thank you to everyone who donated, contributed and shared their experiences," Mr McGowan concluded.

Silver Chain would also like to extend their appreciation to Westfield Carousel, Innaloo and Centro Mandurah Shopping Centres as well as Westpac and Croissant Express.

Blue Skies (bereavement program)

Blue Skies – helping children cope with loss

Silver Chain, in partnership with Joondalup Health Campus, is pleased to offer a workshop aimed at promoting healthy grieving for children who are bereaved.

Blue Skies is an innovative program developed by palliative care social workers, for children aged between eight and twelve years old, who are grieving the loss of a parent or primary caregiver.

Blue Skies provides a safe, fun filled and supportive environment connecting children who are grieving, and teaches them how to feel safe to speak about their feelings. The program aims to assist children in recognising, naming and developing awareness of the variety of emotions associated with death, and expressing these emotions. Bringing children together who are experiencing a similar life change also reduces the isolation associated with a bereavement and enables them to give and receive support in a shared creative environment.

What’s involved

Blue Skies educates about loss, grief and change through psycho-educational sessions, puppets, play, art (paint, sand), music, and ritual. Children will explore their feelings and learn to identify their strengths that can help them through their grieving process, and develop coping strategies and trust.

The next workshop will be held:

Date     Thursday, 7 October and Friday, 8 October 2010 (during school
           holidays)
Time     9:00am – 3:00pm (all refreshments provided)
Venue   Scarboro Surf Life Saving Club, bottom of Scarborough
             Beach Road ("The Esplanade") at Scarborough Beach, Perth WA.

Silver Chain Social Worker, Belinda Hughes is involved in delivering the Blue Skies program. She says counsellors understand that children vary in their emotional and behavioural reactions to the death of a significant family member.

“One of the most common feelings children express is loneliness,” says Belinda.

“This is reduced by bringing children together in a group setting, where they are encouraged to share and express their emotions. The workshops are run in a safe, gentle and supportive environment and we use puppets, paint, sand and music throughout the program to enable children to express what they’ve been experiencing since their loss.”

“The children also learn about grief and change and they meet and talk with others who have had someone in their family die. They also learn that it is OK to talk about their feelings and that with courage, patience and creativity they can have happy times again.”

Silver Chain's 2010 Golf Day

The Silver Chain Cup, Silver Chain's annual corporate fundraising event, was held on Friday, 30 April 2010 at the Lake Karrinyup Country Club.

Proudly supported by The John Hughes Group, this year's event was a great success raising funds for the purchase of portable diagnostic equipment for Silver Chain Home Hospital.

"Silver Chain's annual golf day has continued to grow and become increasingly successful each year. The ongoing support from corporate sponsors allows us to continue to provide essential services and to ensure the needs of the community are met now and into the future," said Silver Chain's Chief Executive Officer, Mr Chris McGowan.

Teams enjoyed 18 holes on the magnificent private course, all vying for first, second and third place. An Ambrose event, golfers of all abilities played alongside the more experienced for a challenging afternoon on the fairways.

Taking the Plunge - Silver Chain's Fundraiser

Special thanks to Jodee Anderson and Carmen Sierke from BHP Billiton Iron Ore for taking the plunge this year and supporting our fundraiser.

Jodee and Carmen both took to the waters at AQWA Perth's underwater aquarium on Tuesday, 8 June 2010 to dive with the sharks.

Both ladies came face to face with 13 sharks including six grey nurse sharks all over three metres in length, stingrays, turtles and 75 different species of fish, while raising more than $65,000!! Proceeds raised will support us in many ways including the purchase of equipment for clients, the introduction of new programs and funding research to develop innovative models of care. Donations also assist us to contribute towards the establishment of new facilities including our service centres, health centres, day centres and additional training for employees.

Jodee and Carmen both said they felt nervous before entering the water, but experienced a great thrill from giving something back to the community.

"I was just praying that I'd make it out all in one piece," says Jodee. "Once I was down there I was fine. I'm quite adventurous and I love trying new things, so I jump at the chance to do anything that is a once in a lifetime opportunity, hopefully encouraging others to go out and do as much as they can for charities."
