Clinical education

The purpose of Clinical Education at Silver Chain is "to increase the community's capacity to maximise its health and wellbeing by effectively developing our clinical staff and students to provide competent clinical care underpinned by critical thinking and evidence based practice". Our specific objectives are to:

  • Empower practitioners to learn.
  • Facilitate inter-professional learning.
  • Promote undergraduate and post graduate education opportunities.
  • Embed evaluation and outcomes assessment.
  • Explore funds generating opportunities.

1          ANAPHYLAXIS (1.5 HOURS)

Classroom session or self directed learning workbook covering the assessment and management of anaphylaxis in the home.

Content:  reaction of cells to allergens; assessment and management of severe anaphylaxis and skin reactions; demonstration, practice and assessment of competency in use of an EpiPEN®.

2          CENTRAL VENOUS ACCESS DEVICES - CORE MODULE (2 HOURS)

 Classroom session or a self directed learning workbook.

Content:  indications for insertion of a CVAD; choice of veins; different types of devices; complications of CVAD; nursing management of a client with a PICC line.

3          CLINICAL INFECTION CONTROL (2 HOURS)

Classroom session or a self directed learning workbook.

4          DIABETES (2 HOURS)

Classroom session providing education on the assessment and management of diabetes.

Content:  Patho physiology, normal glycogenisis, therapeutic targets, oral medications; insulin and sick day guidelines; insulin delivery devices.

5          PERIPHERAL CANNULATION

Is available as a self directed learning workbook.

Content:  anatomy and physiology of the vein; intravenous complications; documentation and calculations; cannulation procedure

6        PRESSURE ULCER RISK ASSESSMENT AND MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (PURAMS) (3 HOURS)

Classroom session incorporating theory and equipment demonstration.

Content:  pressure ulcer stages and risk factors; pressure ulcer prevention guidelines; completion of Pressure Ulcer Risk Assessment scoring for clients; a variety of pressure reducing and pressure relieving equipment and use is demonstrated.

7          STOMAL THERAPY (3 HOURS)

Classroom session covering assessment, management, support and education of a person with a stoma.  There is pre-course reading for this program.

Content:  Classification of what a stoma is; reasons for stoma formation; different types of stomas; detail on different types of stomas and associated appliances (tracheostomy, gastrostomy, nephrostomy, urostomy, jejonostomy, ileostomy, caecostomy, colostomy); common surgical procedures of the bowel resulting in stoma formation; choice of appropriate appliance; skin care; common problems and problem solving.

8          URINARY AND FAECAL INCONTINENCE (3 MODULES EACH OF 3 HOURS DURATION)

Classroom sessions (3 modules each of 3 hours duration) providing education on urinary and faecal incontinence.  There is pre-course reading for this program.

Content:

(Module 1):  prevalence, psycho-social effects and the urinary system; nursing assessment, continence aides and case studies; types, causes and management of urinary incontinence; case study care planning.

(Module 2):  reasons for types and potential complications of urinary catheters; drainage systems; demonstrated and practice of clinical competencies in male and suprapubic catheterisation (on a manikin).

(Module 3):  normal bowel function; bowel function assessment; causes, features and nursing management of faecal incontinence.

9          WOUND CARE 1 AND 2 (4 MODULES EACH OF 3 HOURS DURATION)

Classroom sessions (4 modules each of 3 hours duration) incorporating 12 hours of education on all aspects of wound care.  There is pre-course reading for these programs.

Content:

Wound Care 1 (Module 1) 3 hours

Structure and function of skin; wound healing process; nursing assessment; four client wound assessment scenarios.

Wound Care 1 (Module 2) 3 hours

Nursing management; wound debridement; wound management products; four client wound management scenarios.

Wound Care 2 (Module 1) 3 hours

Vessels of lower leg; types and causes of leg ulcers; lower leg assessment; nursing management of leg ulcers; the neuropathic foot; ulcers that fail to heal.

Wound Care 2 (Module 2) 3 hours

Skills workshop for the clinical competencies of Doppler ultrasound, compression bandaging and neuro-ischaemic foot assessment.
